Madhusanka Liyanage Presents on 5G Intrusion Detection at ITU AI for Good Webinar
As part of CONFIDENTIAL6G’s dissemination activities, Madhusanka Liyanage from University College Dublin (UCD), a C6G project partner, was a speaker in the ITU AI for Good “Enabling Intrusion Detection in 5G Networks via Novel Datasets” webinar on 2 March 2023.

The ITU AI for Good platform, organised by the International Telecommunication Union, brings together researchers, practitioners, and policymakers to explore how artificial intelligence and machine learning can contribute to real-world challenges, including security and resilience in communication networks.
In this online session, Madhusanka Liyanage presented work on intrusion detection in 5G networks using novel datasets, demonstrating how a fully labelled dataset developed on a functional 5G test network — known as 5G-NIDD — can support the development and evaluation of AI/ML-based intrusion detection solutions. The session highlighted the role of data-driven approaches in enhancing proactive security mechanisms in modern and future communication systems, where traditional detection methods are often insufficient due to network complexity.
Liyanage’s participation contributed to raising awareness of C6G research interests in network security and AI-driven solutions, and it provided a platform for exchange with international colleagues working on related technical challenges. This activity aligns with C6G’s broader goals of promoting secure and trustworthy networking technologies and engaging with the global research community.
